Evolution of headphones


Headphones are big part of our modern lives. They are all around us, come in all colors and various types. They are easy to find, fun to use and always come in handy. We are so used to have all kinds of headphones available around us that we don't even think about when and how they were invented. Well, stay tuned and check out the next brief facts of invention and evolution of headphones.

  • In 1891 Ernest Mercadier - French electrical engineer invented the very first in ear headphones. They were remarkably close to the earbuds that we use today and we connected like doctors' stethoscope. The Mercadier invention had rubber bands in order to be comfortable and were designed for communications use.
  • In 1894 company called Electrophones created something similar to the headphones we know nowadays. Their headphones were a whole system. It was consisted of a stethoscope type headphone connected to a switchboard. These great new invention allowed customers of Electrophones to tune in to life performances (like the ones in theaters) happening all over London. To listen you had to subscribe. The subscription costed 5 pounds per year and it was very luxurious to have. So here at the beginning of the 20th century for the first time the idea of using headphones for entertainment is born.
  • In the 1910 the US Navy was experimenting with radio connection and communication and the whole American nation was sending them letters with their inventions. One of these letters came from Nataniel Baldwin, who is known as the inventor of what later became modern headphones. Mr Baldwin invented the modern headphones on his kitchen table. The main purpose of these headphones was for communications use. The US Navy used Baldwin's headphones by radio operators.
  • The next big step into headphones history is the invention of Stereo Sound. Stereo Sound was invented in 1957 by a label company called EMI. Just one year later in 1958 were invented the very first stereo headphones by the jazz musician John C Koss. These headphones were the first commercially available ones in the history of headphones. Later on, the Koss corporation was founded, which manufactures and sells headphones even nowadays.
  • In 1979 Sony invented the Walkman, which was a total hit. The original Walkman came with a set of on-ear foam-pad headphones, the model was Sony's MDR-3L2. This is what made the headphones widely used and very popular all over the world. Since than headphones only got better and better.
  • In year 2000 company called Bose released the Quiet Comfort headphones. They use noise-cancellation technology, which is nowadays widely spread. The idea of noise canceling headphones gestated decades earlier. Bose first used this technology in 1986 in a headset designed to protect the hearing of pilots.
  • The next great jump in headphones history is evolution from wired to wireless headphones. The very first wireless headphones were out on the market in 2004, but they became more popular in the 2010s as an alternative to the widespread wired headphones.
  • The last great headphones invention is truly wireless earbuds. They were invented in 2016 and are just becoming famous. Owning a pair of the truly wireless earbuds is a small heaven for music lovers and everybody on the go!
